You can learn a lot about company culture by how they treat you when things happen.

I had major surgery in 2019, less than ~6 months after starting to contract full-time with Lullabot. I let my contacts know what was happening, and that I'd probably be out for 6-8 weeks while I was recovering. As a contractor, I fully didn't expect they'd want to hold a position open for me that long - I figured they'd just want to bring in another contractor to keep things going. But I let them know that I wanted to keep working with them, and they said the feeling was mutual.

They waited for me to recover. Never once did they push for me to come back before I was ready. They sent flowers, and were super supportive as I eased back into working as many hours as I could, until I was back to full-time again. That understanding and generosity of spirit is a true indicator of a positive company #culture - far beyond the superficial "we have free snacks" and "it's so much fun to work here" that you often hear from recruiters and in job pitches.

I'm thinking about this as hubby has a scheduled surgery in ~6 weeks. I wonder what his experience will be like. Guess we'll find out the truth about his company's culture!
